It can be difficult enough to obtain a diagnosis of attention deficit disorder (ADHD or ADD), but to complicate matters further, ADHD commonly\u00a0co-exists with other mental and physical disorders. One review of adults with ADHD demonstrated that 42 percent had one other major psychiatric disorder. Therefore, the diagnostic question is not \u201cIs it bipolar disorder or ADHD?\u201d but rather \u201cIs it\u00a0both?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n

Can You Have Both ADHD and Bipolar Disorder?<\/span><\/div>\n

Perhaps the most difficult differential diagnosis to make is between\u00a0Bipolar Mood Disorder (BMD) and ADHD, since they share many symptoms, including: <\/span><\/div>\n
Mood instability <\/span><\/div>\n
Bursts of energy <\/span><\/div>\n
Restlessness <\/span><\/div>\n
Talkativeness <\/span><\/div>\n
Impatience <\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
It\u2019s estimated that as many as 20 percent of those diagnosed with ADHD also suffer from a mood disorder on the bipolar spectrum \u2014\u00a0and correct diagnosis is critical in treating\u00a0bipolar disorder and ADHD\u00a0together.<\/span><\/div>\n
